2018 is proving to be a successful year at the box office with movies like Raazi, Sonu ke Titu Ki Sweety, Padman, etc. getting good monetary collections and critical acclaim. Another movie Veere Di Wedding is catching eyeballs, one for its powerful star cast and another for its different plot line. Starring Kareena Kapoor Khan, Sonam Kapoor, Swara Bhaskar and Shikha Talsania, Veere Di Wedding is about four veeres (friends) at an “uncertain age” of life facing dilemma in decisions of marriage. The movie, quite progressive for the Indian cinema, is something your neighbour aunt won’t encourage any woman to watch and here’s why we think this way.
1. Progressive Plot Line
The multi-starrer film is about four female friends facing problems related to marriage- a woman who eloped from her family to marry her lover, a woman on the verge of getting divorced, a woman who is unsure about getting married to her boyfriend and a woman who is more focused on career rather than getting married and settling. Although, these situations have been in talks in the society for a while, but their portrayal on the big screen is something new.
2. Use of abusive and sexual words
If you’ve watched the trailer, you’ll be impressed by the words like bhe***** , orgasm and sex, which thanks to the Censor Board have not been censored. This doesn’t ends there, we see Swara Bhaskar enjoying her alcohol and cigarettes a lot of time in the trailer.
3. All Girls Solo Trip
Well, living in a society where girls are given a curfew time to return home, this film shows an all-girls solo trip to Phuket. Quite a fantasy for every girl gang, but definitely not encouraged by your neighbour aunt.
4. Unconventional clothing
Needless to mention is the role of cinema contributing to the “western” culture that is seeping through the Indian “values”. The movie has a strong projection of women wearing whatever they feel comfortable in regardless of any difference of color, body type, height, weight and what the people are going to say.
5. Female friendship
Though cliche, it is important to mention that the movie includes female lead actors, who are bonded through friendship. Age old beliefs tell us that female friendships are not as strong as that of males. Bollywood has challenged the notion various times previously and this film will prove to be the next one in that list.
All these reasons make your neighbour aunt recommend you not to watch this film, but doesn’t all these reasons are good enough to watch it at the same time. Cheers to doing what our heart says. Let’s see what more do the veeres have in store for us.
